"The craft sector achieved a turnover of 17.7% in 2012," said the head of government.
The craft sector achieved a turnover of 17.7% in 2012, compared to 10.4 billion DH in 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of the State, the private sector and all partners, said the head of government, Abdelilah Benkirane, on Friday in Rabat.
Presiding over the annual meeting of the steering committee of the "Vision 2015" for the development of crafts, Benkirane welcomed the number of businesses created operating in the craft sector, which exceeded the target set in this framework, adding that this high value-added sector employs no less than 2.26 million artisans (men and women), or 20% of the active population, and contributes 9% to GDP.
The main challenge of "Vision 2015" for the development of crafts is "the consecration of the proximity policy, through the adoption of regional promotion plans involving all partners at the local and regional levels," assured the head of government.
Benkirane affirmed that this positive progress report on the implementation of "Vision 2015", which is in an advanced phase, should not overshadow the problems and obstacles hindering the sector, which can only be overcome through additional efforts to ensure harmonious, integrated and sustainable development of the sector.
In this regard, he mentioned the problems related to access to financing, the supply of quality raw materials, medical coverage and access to housing for artisans and their families, calling for work to simplify the conditions of interactivity of "Vision 2015" to develop this sector.
Benkirane also welcomed the exemplary partnership between the Mohammed VI Foundation for Solidarity and the craft, employment and vocational training sectors, which has enabled the construction of important infrastructures including training centers and production and sales areas.
Presenting the new national strategy for crafts in Morocco, the Minister in charge, Abdessamad Kayouh, indicated that "Vision 2015" sets as its main objectives to double the turnover of the sector with cultural content (24 billion dirhams (MMDH) of global turnover, i.e. 14 MMDH of additional turnover) and to multiply formal exports by 10.
This strategy also aims to generate 4 MMDH of additional GDP and create 117,500 jobs (37,200 new jobs generated by major producers, 13,750 jobs created by SMEs and 66,500 new single artisans and employees of VSEs).
In terms of achievements, the sector's turnover increased by 13% (between 2007 and 2012), while the number of craft businesses increased to 700 over the same period, with an achievement rate of 234%.
Furthermore, "Vision 2015" saw the creation of 40,886 jobs by the end of 2012, an increase of 2.3% (between 2007 and 2012), in addition to the training of 17,708 graduates of the vocational training system with an achievement rate of 30%.
Regarding continuing education, the Strategy ensured the training of 60,027 people/day, representing an achievement rate of 650%, while 30,022 people benefited from the professional literacy program.
