Shaky, weak, or numb legs, sweaty hands, a heart that feels like it's about to break; you have stage fright and you're not the first, nor the last... So how do you fight this unfair opponent?
Here are three major avenues to keep in mind.
1. Practice positive thinking
It's well known that thoughts create and destroy worlds; they are creative. So remember to think positive, to attract good vibes, and, in case you don't believe it, or it doesn't attract them, it won't push them away either! So absolutely avoid building dreadful catastrophic scenarios. On the contrary, try to visualize your success. Imagine an enthusiastic audience, delighted colleagues, a thrilled boss. And you, fulfilled. This will strengthen your self-confidence, which is the basis of everything.
2. Be prepared
Prepare yourself, work tirelessly, be perfectly informed. Why risk adding anxieties? Any slight flaw in your understanding beforehand will be a real weakness under the pressure of emotion and fear afterwards. So don't shy away from the task, be prepared, be ready! Practice with loved ones, ask them to question you, put yourself in the situation, imagine it realistically; this will help you to be truly prepared. In addition, this simulation will allow you to anticipate more naturally and to avoid being overwhelmed by unexpected reactions from your interlocutors.
3. Relax
Stay calm, breathe from your belly, gather your thoughts, don't get distracted, one thing at a time. Turn off your phone and stop looking at your emails. Focus your action and energy. There's no need to reread your notes for the umpteenth time either. It will only make you more nervous. Reread them the day before, before sleeping, in the morning when you wake up, and that will be more than enough!
In short, clear your mind and relax before you go for it and focus your ideas!
