Despite unemployment, don't lose heart. We'll show you how to organize your job search time effectively. Therefore, proceed deliberately and with discipline during this challenging period.
A job, a permanent position, is not just a financial source of income. Professional activity also provides a solid structure in private life. Studies in Austria and Germany undeniably prove a series of negative health effects of unemployment, culminating in the summary "Unemployment makes you sick".
In the Swiss magazine "The Job Market", some of these negative effects were mentioned:
Decreased self-confidence, because one identifies with their work.
Lack of social environment. Along with the job, one loses a place of social life and moral exchange.
Forced inactivity is not free time. What one has in excess loses value.
Inactivity is a type of stress; even the simplest things become tiring.
An insufficient rhythm of work and relaxation phases is harmful to the body.
It takes more effort to exercise.
Men suffer more intensely from the situation because they consider themselves the main breadwinners.
Setting Goals and Creating Structure
Against this backdrop, it is all the more important to manage imminent unemployment well and to know that it will mean more than just a lot of free time spent writing a few application letters.
It is therefore important to manage this period well. This begins with establishing the right priorities. The first priority is solving the problem: finding a new job. During unemployment, the job is to look for a job. This search must be approached in a structured, systematic, and planned way. It is useful to define a consistent weekly plan with fixed times for different activities.
Establish a Plan
This could look like this: every day from 9 am to 12 pm, work on the job search. If necessary, use a second block from 2 pm to 5 pm. The work week, thus established, begins with selecting job offers from the weekend press. During the weekend, you can conscientiously set aside the commitment to fighting unemployment, as only those with permanent positions apply at that time. For yourself, you start again on Monday.
Or you can set yourself the goal of writing at least one application letter per day. For quality of life, it is precisely this systematic approach with a constant structure or schedule that is important during this period.
Regular Work Leads to Success
Personal initiative also plays an important role. It's good if the employment office can provide a position. But don't rely on it too much. After all, it will be the personal application that will have the desired success. To achieve this, don't give up too easily and show a lot of perseverance.
Whether you have been unemployed or not is not decisive, but rather what you did during that period. Language courses and language stays are viewed positively.
Continuing Education
Measures to undertake or continue training are now highly recommended. If you were made redundant after long-term employment due to bankruptcy, lack of orders, or other internal company reasons, this also doesn't have much impact.
If you receive an invitation to a job interview, temporary unemployment has already not led to rejection. Therefore, it may not be a topic of the interview. In the foreground will most likely be your qualifications, performance capabilities, and what you can do specifically for the new company. It's about the future, not the past.
Don't Forget the Joy of Living
But life goes on during the job search. This is also what psychotherapist Andreas Zimmermann emphasizes: "Alongside your commitment to the job search, undertake activities that make you feel good. Meet friends for fun. Exercise and get involved in other things. Perhaps you have the possibility and desire to use this phase for volunteer work."
Just because you're unemployed doesn't mean you're on a dead-end road. In his opinion, social support from family and friends is central. But you shouldn't just talk about your problems, but also have other topics of conversation.
