Generate Your Own Energy

Text: Thirsty for change but don't know how to do it? Here is advice from author and speaker Jean-Pierre Lemaitre to help you. This week, discover how your body language influences your attitude and vice versa!

We are not sufficiently aware of the impact our body has on how we feel and on the fluctuations of our energy level during the day. Body language is an extremely powerful tool that allows you to instantly modify the emotional state in which we find ourselves. Try the following experiment: try to stand as straight as possible; taking a deep breath, keep your chest well inflated and your head high, show your best smile and try to think of something sad. Admit that it's not easy. Now, put your head down, breathe weakly, hunch your back and look towards the ground. What kind of ideas are running through your head? It is quite possible that they are more gloomy ideas. Your posture may even have triggered feelings of sadness or discouragement.

As you can see, the simple act of positioning our body in one way or another has an impact on our emotions. This is reflected not only in the tone and timbre of our voice, but also in the strength of conviction that emerges (or not) from our words.

Smile!

Smiling, for example, generates positive energy. By adopting a dynamic and positive physical attitude, you send signals to your subconscious which automatically changes your internal representations, as well as your mental state. It is therefore important to monitor your posture. Simply standing up straight will improve your breathing and increase your self-confidence. Avoid crossing your arms, as this prevents you from opening up to others. In all circumstances, make sure that your body language is in line with the objectives you are pursuing. When you meet someone during a job search, pay attention to your different postures and your breathing and adjust them, as needed, in order to instantly modify your state.

Your state is also conditioned by your thoughts. If you constantly tell yourself: "I will never succeed", you send signals to your subconscious and your body will follow without question.

The words you use resonate within you and are reflected in your attitude. Your vocabulary also influences the person in front of you and can give an impression of doubt or lack of motivation. Choosing the expressions and adjectives that will be important to your interlocutor is essential to succeed in a job interview.

Saying "I would like to..." does not have the same resonance as "That's exactly what I want to do!" Answering "why not" does not have the same weight as "Definitely: yes!"

Telling yourself that we have the strength or energy necessary to accomplish the task at hand gives an order to the brain, which does the rest on our whole body. The maxim "If you want to be powerful, pretend to be powerful" takes on its full meaning here.

You can also apply the "pretend" technique, which is implacable and extremely simple. If you don't know how to behave in a situation, pretend you know how! The human being does not like dissonance, put yourself in the position and state in which you would like to be and you will feel the benefits very quickly.

No excuses to memorize:

• Your body language influences your mental state;
• Adjust your posture and vocabulary according to the messages you want to convey;
• Use the "pretend" method if you don't know how to act.
