Managing Jealousy at Work

Jealousy? Not us, not us… and yet, yes. Your colleague got a promotion, is much more comfortable speaking publicly, in meetings, has more charisma or influence than you, has become the boss’s confidant, has a network you’ll never have… Yes, you are jealous. However archaic, primary and vain this feeling may be, stop feeling guilty. No one is perfect. It’s human.
Furthermore, let’s quickly remember that “emulation between colleagues refers to competition between siblings or classmates, and positioning oneself in relation to the manager echoes the competition between children to gain parental attention,” says Martine Ledart, a business coach.
Jealousy exists as soon as there is envy, envy of having the same thing, envy of being the same person. The other person, the one facing you, suddenly becomes the projected fantasy of yourself, and at that point, jealousy appears, the kind that gnaws and wears away.
Why? Because the frustration of not being and/or possessing the same thing becomes unmanageable.
Other hidden reasons may be the cause.
Thus, it may happen that you recognize yourself in this colleague, that they are what you dislike about yourself, what you refuse, reject. A defense mechanism will therefore be put in place.
There are simple solutions to eliminate this negative feeling, which one does not emerge unscathed from, since it is debasing. It is indeed a question of putting in place the possibility of obtaining what gives you such a powerful desire: a promotion? So know, be well aware that such advancement can also be within your reach if you give yourself the means. Create an action plan and focus on your ultimate goal. This will, at the same time, build your career springboard. And this jealousy will become the driving element.
Transform negative energies into positive power, that is the idea. To this ferment of hatred, oppose the only positive reality: firm and radical action.
