Steps to take, advantages, disadvantages and plan B for each option.
Reporting an incompetent colleague
Steps to take > Note in detail the reasons, with concrete examples, that demonstrate the colleague's incompetence, and then meet with the boss to inform them.
To consider > Giving your written notes directly to the boss: besides appearing extremist, it gives the impression of having wasted a lot of time during work hours!
Advantages > An incompetent employee generally forces others to work more: their departure therefore lightens the workload for everyone.
Disadvantages > Appearing to be a whistleblower to other colleagues and your boss, a label that can stick to you for a long time.
Plan B > Confronting them: before going to see your superior, try to make the incompetent person understand that their disappointing work can sometimes restore the situation much more easily.
Letting the boss do their job
Steps to take > Do not correct the colleague's mistakes and patiently wait for the situation to explode so that the boss realizes their incompetence and fires them.
To consider > Even by abstaining from intervening, it is better to keep an eye on the incompetent person, especially if they are using a circular saw or other dangerous equipment as part of their work!
Advantages > Clears your conscience in the event of a dismissal, when the incompetent person is a friend or someone who really needs their job financially.
Disadvantages > In serious cases of incompetence, letting the colleague make their mistakes can lead to unforeseen consequences, such as the loss of clients and, ultimately, your own job.
Plan B > Let someone else do the dirty work: explain the situation to a colleague and convince them to go see the boss themselves.
