English proficiency is practically essential in the professional world. More and more companies, especially multinationals, have switched to English. Job offers, even when not written directly in English, increasingly include language requirements such as mastery, advanced knowledge of English, professional or operational English, bilingual English, etc. It's difficult to distinguish: are we talking about written English, meetings conducted in English, or reporting?
Potential candidates must assess their language level. Indicators such as "I have good remnants from high school or university," "I have an American friend," or "I watched a DVD in English last week" are not sufficient. Similarly, waiting until an interview to assess one's English is a risky strategy, even doomed to failure. It is better to try to highlight one's skills instead of focusing solely on spoken English.
To open doors, you need functional English, professional English. Don't hesitate to brush up on your skills by taking intensive courses or even retaking aptitude tests recognized by professionals such as the TOEFL or TOEIC. This will give you confidence during a potential interview and, why not, open up new professional horizons such as an international position.
