Transportation: Mohammed V Airport Undergoes Restructuring

While awaiting the completion of a mega-project for Terminal 2, scheduled for the end of the year, the ONDA (National Airports Office) has converted the old pilgrim terminal into Terminal 3.

The first Royal Air Maroc flight from Terminal 3, departing for Milan, took off from Mohammed V Airport on Monday, May 1, 2006, at 8:00 AM. Located in the south wing of Mohammed V International Airport, this 5,000 m² facility provides a much-needed boost to the airport platform while the old terminal undergoes renovations. Terminal 3 has 9 check-in counters and will handle 45 weekly departures from Casablanca: 5 flights to the USA, 5 to Canada, 18 to Italy, 10 to Germany, and 7 to the Netherlands. This terminal will only handle departing flights. By the end of the year, 294,000 passengers will depart from this former pilgrim terminal: 57,000 to the USA, 55,000 to Canada, 107,000 to Italy, 38,000 to Germany, and 37,000 to the Netherlands. These are exclusively Royal Air Maroc flights. The boarding gates have 600 square meters of space, with 1,400 square meters of space outside the terminal.

Free, fast, and regular shuttle services will run between Terminals 1, 2, and 3 every ten minutes. The terminal has two duty-free shops, a newsstand and tobacco shop, and a currency exchange bureau. A food court with two snack bars, one in the secure area and one in the public area, completes the facilities. The renovation cost the Office of Airports approximately 2 million dirhams. This project was implemented to address the surge in traffic at Mohammed V Airport, which is expected to increase from 4 million passengers in 2004 to 8 million in 2008. In anticipation of this traffic increase, the ONDA undertook the construction of a second terminal, a billion-dirham mega-project that will be operational by the end of the year. Quoted by the MAP agency, Othmane Benmoussa, director of Mohammed V Airport, stated that this new development allows the ONDA to balance the proven need to develop its port infrastructure with the need to guarantee the best possible comfort for its passengers.
