The start of a new year is often an opportunity for new resolutions! It's a chance to take stock of the past year and set new goals for the year ahead. Some will quit smoking, others will decide to finally start exercising, and still others will choose a more "spiritual" path, which will be to learn to manage their emotions in stressful situations, to communicate better, to build trust and inspire confidence...simply seeking a positive environment both at work and at home. In the office, this would translate as follows.
Staying positive in all circumstances
For this new year, we will strive to keep smiling even when a colleague or collaborator is acting in bad faith. We won't let ourselves be overwhelmed by emotions, always keeping in mind that with a touch of humor and perspective we can defuse any crisis situation.
It's best to assess how you feel at that precise moment and calmly explain what's wrong instead of letting your inner anger explode or imposing it on your team all day long.
Being exemplary in all matters
This year is the time to create your dream team! A team that listens without you having to force or repeat things, where everyone respects the established rules, and where you won't have that awful, time-consuming role of enforcer that you hate so much.
To do this, lead by example. Don't expect your collaborators to arrive on time if you yourself are always late. Don't expect them to fill out reports correctly if you don't read them. If you want to command respect and gain authority, there's no secret: lead by example.
Knowing how to listen and be available
If this wasn't the case last year, this year, don't keep your office door closed from morning to night! Even if you want to set aside quiet time to focus on important projects, set aside specific hours when your office door will remain open to your collaborators.
Reach out to your teams, listen to what they have to say, and most importantly, take notes. Don't lose sight of the fact that we all need to belong to a group, and the most important thing in a group is to feel good in it. For this, you must allow people the opportunity to speak and express themselves freely.
Being fair
Know this: it's absolutely impossible to trust a manager who isn't fair. This year, if you want to build a strong relationship with your teams, you'll have to learn to be consistent in your actions. If you're demanding one day and lax the next, no one will know how to behave with you, and no one will risk being honest with you.
If you have tended to let it appear that there are differences in treatment within your teams, stop doing that and learn to be more impartial. Distribute tasks fairly and give raises in a justified manner so as not to create resentment or bitterness.
Making decisions and owning them
If you felt last year that you couldn't implement certain decisions, this year is the time to put new things in place and own them!
However, once you do, don't go back on them after a week because people disagree or complain that they have too much work...Enforce your decisions and own them if you believe it is good for the company.
If you follow these resolutions throughout the year, they will help you maintain a climate of trust within your teams, motivating them to invest more in a calm and serene atmosphere. So don't wait any longer, and start applying them tomorrow!
