The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) opened its new office in Tunis on Thursday, a TAP journalist reported.
The Agency, whose commitments in Tunisia have reached 288 million dollars (1 dollar = 1.8 dinars), now has a building on the grounds of the American embassy in Tunis.
For Ms. Alina Romanowski, the Agency's deputy administrator, the reopening of the USAID office in Tunis, 21 years after its closure in 1993, reflects a change in objectives.
Thus, the Agency, which has had successful cooperation projects with the country since the 1960s in several areas, including agriculture and education, is now working to strengthen partnerships, promote job creation and assist the Tunisian state in its ongoing tax reforms, she added.
The reopening of this office reflects the American commitment to supporting the Tunisian people and strengthening the economic reform programs underway in Tunisia, said the American ambassador to Tunis, Jacob Walles.
He recalled that these issues were at the heart of the strategic dialogue between the two countries launched last April during the visit of the head of the provisional government Mehdi Jomaa to the United States.
For the Minister of Equipment, Territorial Development and Sustainable Development, Hédi Larbi, it is a matter of consolidating the transition process, the difficulties of which are significant given the geostrategic context in which Tunisia finds itself.
USAID interventions in Tunisia are structured, according to the agency, around six axes/programs; namely the tax reform project, the business reform and competitiveness project (BRCP), and the Center for Entrepreneurial Development and Leadership (CEED).
They also focus on the Tunisian-American Enterprise Fund (TAEF), whose contribution to Tunisian businesses reached 40 million dollars in 2012 and 2013, with an additional 20 million dollars planned for 2014.
USAID is also involved in election observation programs and a multilateral cooperation project involving the Tunisian and Italian governments, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), with the aim of promoting job creation in the interior regions.
