Large companies often have a communications department. The manager defines and implements the communication policies or projects set by the company's management. The communications manager oversees the writing of press releases and press kits. They choose and/or design communication materials and study the means of production: signs, film scripts, CDs, magazine articles, educational documents, web pages...
They follow up with journalists and press outlets (print, radio, TV, Internet) when operations are organized so that the company name gets the maximum exposure. The communications manager is also responsible for organizing events, whether for clients, employees, or company staff. They do everything possible to ensure that trade shows, press conferences, cocktail parties, etc., run smoothly and that the company presents itself in the best possible light on each occasion.
2. Under what conditions? Which employers?
The communications manager often has to travel to meet their contacts and participate in the events they organize or are invited to. Since these events can take place in the evenings or at weekends, their schedule is very variable. Their workload can be intense for varying lengths of time: preparing a communications campaign, setting up a website, managing a crisis...
They can work either within a company with a communications department, in a communications agency, or as a freelancer.
3. How to access this position?
Communications managers are generalists or specialists from various backgrounds: communications (CELSA, EFAP, postgraduate diploma in public relations...), journalism, or more general fields such as political science, commerce, management, human resources... They have solid experience in the role and are very familiar with the activity sector of the organization. They are proficient in multimedia techniques, the graphic chain, computer tools, and English.
4. How to progress?
The communications manager can progress to positions such as Communications Director in larger organizations or move into other management positions within the organization.
They can also become self-employed as a consultant.
