You just lost your job? Act in a way that will facilitate the rest of your professional career. Here are some tips to avoid damage.
Your box of personal belongings under your arm, you are about to leave the office for good. Monique Soucy, a psychosociologist in career management, suggests some actions to take before you leave.
Ask for a letter of recommendation
Request it as soon as possible. "Ideally, get it before leaving the company," says Ms. Soucy. This way, you will have it in hand when you start your job search. However, there is no point in asking for it if you are fired for incompetence. Your boss would refuse it anyway!
Finish your work well
Do you have to finish your week or workday? Complete your tasks well. "The employee is paid to do work," says Ms. Soucy. "They must do it to the end." This will protect your reputation.
Greet your colleagues
Thank the colleagues with whom you have had good professional relationships and ask for their contact information. Tell them that they may be called for references.
Use criticism to improve yourself
Welcome comments without trying to be right, but without unnecessarily belittling yourself either. If you disagree with the employer's verdict, simply reply: "That's your point of view, but I think I have provided good service." Use criticism to improve yourself or turn it to your advantage. Are you criticized for paying too much attention to detail? Look for a job that requires meticulousness.
