Gilles Corcos is the author of the book "Develop your emotional skills". He is also a coach and founder of the "Odyssée motion" firm. He explains why employees should develop their emotional skills.
Why develop your emotional skills
"Employees have every interest in developing their emotional skills for three main reasons. First, it will allow them to reconnect with themselves. In companies, employees can develop stress levels that can lead to suicide. This situation has been made possible because people have disconnected from themselves. Performance is, of course, a good thing. But it must not result in personal imbalance. Then, developing one's emotional skills allows one to speak the truth. It is a way of welcoming the other's truth. It also means speaking with one's emotions, one's feelings. This allows to install a coherence between what one feels and what one says. It is a way to be in agreement with one's conscience. Finally, developing one's emotional skills implies reconnecting with one's aspirations. This means that one will direct one's life and not suffer it. To do this, one must listen to one's emotions and desires. It also implies directing oneself in a direction that one has truly chosen. And not the one that parents, entourage or society has chosen for you".
How to develop this emotional skill?
"It can be difficult to develop one's emotional skills. It must be done intelligently. Having said that, to develop them, it is important to learn to look through one's own eyes. The goal is to avoid doing so through our beliefs and assumptions. We must perceive things as they are. It is both very simple. Just use your senses. But also very complicated because we are used to making everything go through the prism of our beliefs, our interpretations. Jean-Louis Servan-Schreiber said that Native Americans did not see the ships of the Spanish conquistadors because for them ships did not exist. So they ignored this information. It's the same thing in our daily lives. We may be tempted to ignore phenomena that we consider impossible or improbable.
Yet, they take place before our eyes and can have considerable importance. Valuing one's partners also helps to develop one's emotional skills. To do this, one must have self-esteem. It is also necessary to get in the habit of saying things that need to be said. These may be difficult decisions to make. Managers tend to be influenced by the opinions of others. Finally, one must be able to build one's own vision. That is to say, to know where one wants to go".
What can emotional skills be used for in a company?
"They condition trust relationships. Imagine that employees do not use them. In this case, the person will interpret 80% of the information they receive. They will not value their partners. They will not say what they think. This will produce stress and a loss of development for the company. Conversely, emotional competence develops creativity and interpersonal trust. All the energy that some people may use to protect themselves, to hide from others, is then used to move the company forward. I also believe that a person developing their emotional skills is more authentic, more ethical. In the long run, their brand image will be improved. It is an element with whom others will want to work"
