What tone should you adopt during a job interview?
Is it possible to use all modes of expression, humor, sensitivity, or are some to be avoided? Stepstone has found out for you.
You have applied for your dream job and the time for the interview has come. Should you adopt a particular behavior during this interview? Can you afford to play on all modes?
"You have to be natural, not put yourself in a zone of behavioral effort," explains Hymane Ben Aoun, director of the recruitment consulting firm Aravati France, "if in life you use humor, use it in the interview, be yourself." This suggestion from Hymane Ben Aoun sets the general tone from the recruiter's point of view. What they are looking for is a person who corresponds to the proposed job and whose character is compatible with the team or the company. "If you are nonchalant, don't try to hide it in the interview: the company will discover it, it is better to state it from the start, the essential thing is to have a correct attitude: once, I saw a candidate who put their feet on the table. That is not acceptable."
Humor and employment: a risky bet!
If the point of view of the director of Aravati France is perfectly understandable, it is nevertheless necessary to be careful not to feel too free. This is a job interview, not a meeting with a former schoolmate. Some recruiters strongly advise against humor. It is not universal and you never know how it will be received. As a general rule, you must above all be courteous, correct and avoid any excessive feelings, whether it is laughter, arrogance, sensitivity, sympathy, ...
Once again, this is an interview in the context of a job offer, and all the gestures or tone that belong to the friendly world must be used sparingly. Recruiters are looking for competent people able to interact with teams, this does not imply being friendly. Similarly, playing on the string of sensitivity is a risky calculation: except in HR functions, sensitivity is rarely a recruitment criterion for companies.
Shy: make yourself known!
There are behaviors that are difficult to control, especially if you are a reserved or stressed person. This is not very serious, the recruiter is looking for a competent person for a specific position and it is not because you are shy that you do not have the skills corresponding to the job offers. Hymane Ben Aoun advises shy people to indicate this to the recruiter from the start: it gets better by saying it and it will allow the recruiter to add this element of context to their overall assessment. The right tone, the right behavior, is the one that develops as the interview progresses when you present your profile, explain your interest in the position, ask your questions. In short, when you have entered your interview and you are natural. At cruising speed, there is a good chance that your behavior will be the right one.
