Resumes are like fashion: trends change over time! This season, it's all about the hybrid resume, which combines the strengths of the functional and chronological resumes.
Also called a combination resume, the hybrid resume summarizes professional experience in a way that highlights the most remarkable achievements and skills that show employability.
1- The best of both worlds
A chronological resume lists jobs held from most recent to oldest, to showcase experience. Candidates who use it seek to highlight tasks accomplished and responsibilities acquired over the years.
On the other hand, the functional resume is preferred by newcomers to the job market, as it highlights skills that can be used in the desired job.
At the crossroads of these two models, the hybrid resume allows you to display the skills developed in relation to the career path followed. It is suitable for workers who have evolved in different positions or whose careers have been interrupted. Gaps in time are less visible in a combination resume than in a traditional resume.
2- A resume adapted to today's realities
Nowadays, people change jobs much faster. In this context, the hybrid resume has the advantage of emphasizing experiences that "match" the target job.
The trick is to group the most relevant experiences chronologically under a first section to demonstrate the logic between the career path and the desired position. This technique is foolproof for highlighting experiences that may be several years old, but which, with a chronological resume, would have been lost among other achievements.
The other sections of the resume will be added as complementary assets, which will add value to what the recruiter is looking for.
3-What doesn't change
Name, first name, address... As with the other two resume models, personal information should be written at the top of the first page of the resume. Specific skills such as spoken languages or mastered software should be listed in separate sections.
The section presenting university or college education should be placed at the beginning if it adds brilliance to the profile. Otherwise, it is better to put it at the end. Don't forget that the principle of the combination resume is to direct the recruiters' eyes to the elements of your career that best fit the job they offer. It's a winning formula, certainly, but it requires a good dose of preparation to be concise and get straight to the point.
Building a hybrid resume when you've always been used to writing chronological resumes can be difficult. Consulting examples of combination resumes on the Internet is a good way to familiarize yourself with this way of showcasing your professional experience and skills.
